Depending on what your shooting, you must decide how close up or how far back you are from the photo. For example, in my last photo it is outside and it is building. If i were to go any close I wouldn't get all the shapes in the photo which would leave out the pattern. When I took the photo I wanted to get a little bit of everything to add onto the focal point, the glass. My photo was taken horizontal to gather as much as a could laterally into the photo. It does follow the rule of thirds because the glass is not directly in the center, it is on the right portion of the photo even though it does take up much of the photo. The photo is an example of pattern mostly because throughout the photo you see those square boxes throughout even on the cement building.
